The traditional model of slow stages from coding to testing to build and deploy has been found to be in adequate to serve the need of rapid development across sites and across time zones. With the Agile process production level code will have to be built and deployed on multiple servers and VMs across data centres and cloud zones.
The configuration management of software application code and other resources, build management and runtime environment during deployment are getting highly complex and therefore require a seamless pipeline. This pipeline needs to be automated to reduce human error and also to deploy new applications and update old ones on maybe thousands of servers and VM instances in a large cloud service. Unlike yesteryears when an application used to run on a single , sometimes proprietary tech stack, modern applications on server side and cloud services leverage multiple tech stances , libraries and runtime environments. Runtime environment creation is therefore itself automated through Server provisioning script that are quite complex based on several dependencies and configuration parameters. Provisioning runtime environments entails a synchronisation with development environment and staging or intermediate integration environment. This is achieved through an automated and scalable DevOps process called CI/CD – Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment.
CICD tools offer that critical service for cloud services architecture wherein teams across timezones can update code and resources on distributed repositories, test and integrate, build and deploy through a robust pipeline.
Dockers help to bring about consistency in runtime environment when the deployment teams does not need to spend time of bringing up the runtime environment but can just start or stop a docker environment within the deployment script. The docker technology itself has evolved to achieve scale when this procedure needs to be applied to hundreds of servers across networks.
